Workers' comp for remodelers and handyman companies

Coverage for kitchen, bath, and whole-house remodelers and handyman crews, with benefits for your lead carpenters.

Your class codes

Residential remodeling usually falls under carpentry class 5645 for one- and two-family homes. Commercial carpentry, drywall, flooring, painting, and tile can each carry their own codes. Mixed-trade crews often have payroll across several codes, and splitting it correctly can lower your premium. Tell us what your crew actually does day to day.

Roofing is out

We don't place crews that do roofing, including the occasional re-roof or roof repair as part of a bigger job. If you sub roofing to a separate insured roofer, that's fine. Make sure you have their certificate.

Florida rules for remodelers

Remodeling is construction under Florida's comp law. Coverage is required from your first employee, owners count unless exempt, and only three officers can file exemptions. Permits require proof of coverage.

Subs on remodel jobs

Remodelers lean on subs for electrical, plumbing, and tile. Under Florida law, you're responsible for covering an uninsured sub's workers on your job. Collect certificates before work starts.

Benefits for lead carpenters

A lead who can run a remodel without you on site is the hardest person to replace. Health insurance and a 401(k) through a PEO help keep them. How benefits work.

What to have ready

  • Headcount and last year's payroll, and what types of work your crew does
  • Your current declarations page, if you have a policy
  • Loss runs for the last 3 to 5 years
  • Which subs you use, and whether they carry comp

None of it is needed to start a quote.

Questions

I'm a one-person handyman with a helper. Do I need comp?

If your work counts as construction, Florida requires comp from the first employee. Your helper likely counts. Owners can file an exemption for themselves if they qualify.

Does occasional roof repair rule me out?

For our partners, yes. If you sub it to an insured roofer instead of doing it yourself, you can still get quoted.

Find out what your crew would pay
